Prague and other European cities tighten tourism rules: new restrictions on rentals and nightlife
Starting in July 2025, Prague will implement new restrictions on short-term rentals and nightlife to better manage tourism-related disturbances. One key measure is a ban on organized bar tours from 10 PM to 6 AM, aimed at reducing noise and disorderly conduct in tourist hotspots. Additionally, new rules for platforms like Airbnb will limit the number of days properties can be rented out.
Landlords will be required to register their properties through a new electronic platform called eTurista. This system will track all rental transactions, reducing the number of unregulated rentals, which currently make up a significant portion of the market. The new rules also aim to close the tax gap caused by unreported rental income, improving oversight in the sector.
Other European cities, such as Amsterdam and Paris, have adopted similar measures to address overtourism. Prague’s local government hopes to ease the strain on housing and public services caused by the rise in tourism. The increase in short-term rentals has led to a surge in housing prices, pushing long-term residents out of the city.
These changes will help the city maintain its appeal to tourists while improving the quality of life for locals. Tourists planning to visit Prague should be aware of these new rules and prepare accordingly, especially if they plan to use short-term rental platforms like Airbnb.
The upcoming restrictions reflect a growing trend across Europe where cities strive to balance the needs of tourists and residents. Visitors will still be able to enjoy Prague’s beauty and historical architecture. However, the city will now offer a more controlled and orderly environment.
