Romania and Bulgaria, after more than 15 years since becoming part of the European Union, have gained complete access to the Schengen Zone. This decision was made following complex negotiations that culminated in a deal with Austria reached in March this year. Austria had previously raised objections, citing insufficient efforts to combat unauthorized migration. Now, both nations have entered the free movement zone, which comprises 29 states and includes approximately 400 million people.

For travelers, this signifies simplified journeys between nations, as border controls with neighbors such as Hungary will be lifted. This change will be particularly noticeable during the summer months when seasonal border queues could last for hours. Locals and tourists in the area will now save significant time when crossing frontiers.

Strengthened Border Controls

To secure the lifting of Austria's opposition, Romania and Bulgaria implemented extensive reforms. Key initiatives included bolstering control along the frontier separating Bulgaria and Turkey, a hotspot for migration flows. Additionally, numerous operations were conducted to dismantle groups involved in smuggling people across borders.

Recent data shows a decrease in illegal border crossings through Romania and Bulgaria from 70,000 to 4,000 cases within a year. This achievement was made possible through collaboration with European law enforcement.

Fresh Prospects for Tourism

Integration into the Schengen Zone opens fresh opportunities for tourism in Romania and Bulgaria. European visitors can now visit these countries without delays at border crossings. Popular destinations such as Bran Castle in Romania or Bulgaria's Black Sea coast will become even more accessible.

This event also encourages the improvement of tourist infrastructure. The lifting of border checks is anticipated to increase the number of visitors, that could play an essential role in boosting the regional economy. Additionally, simplified logistics are expected to attract those who prefer road trips across Europe.
