Royal Caribbean International, one of the largest cruise operators, has introduced a new list of prohibited items, aiming to enhance onboard safety for its passengers. Among the newly banned items is the widely-used multi-plug outlet, a popular travel accessory that has now joined the ranks of other forbidden objects such as alcohol, fireworks, and weapons.

Changes to Packing Rules

As of this latest update, passengers cruising with Royal Caribbean or its subsidiary, Celebrity Cruises, will need to rethink their packing strategies. The ban primarily targets extension cords, power strips, and multi-plug outlets, citing concerns over potential fire hazards. This shift is expected to affect travelers who rely on these accessories to charge multiple electronic devices in their cabins, such as phones, fans, or tablets.

Cruise enthusiasts have long considered multi-plug outlets an essential part of their packing list. The ban may come as an inconvenience to frequent travelers, many of whom use these outlets to power various devices throughout the trip. However, Royal Caribbean has hinted at alternatives. Passengers are encouraged to make use of the USB ports already available in most cabins. Additionally, travelers may opt for plug converters to utilize both American and European outlets found onboard.

Smart Alternatives for Travelers

While multi-plug outlets may be off-limits, Royal Caribbean passengers can still take advantage of battery packs or power banks, which remain allowed. These portable chargers offer a convenient way to ensure electronic devices stay powered during the voyage, especially when passengers are away from their cabins.

Some cruise veterans have suggested small changes to daily routines, such as leaving devices to charge while enjoying meals in the ship's dining areas. Another idea is to locate lesser-known outlets in the cabins, like those in the bathroom or behind bedside lamps, as many newer ships are equipped with multiple charging stations.

The prohibition of multi-plug outlets is just the latest in a series of regulations aimed at improving safety onboard. While some passengers may find these new restrictions frustrating, the cruise line emphasizes that safety remains a top priority.

Impact on Future Cruises

With this new policy in place, the question remains how strictly it will be enforced. Reports from passengers on recent cruises suggest that some have already had their multi-plug outlets confiscated during embarkation. As the policy takes full effect, travelers are advised to double-check their packing lists and adjust accordingly to avoid any potential inconveniences at boarding.
