As the travel industry steadily recovers, Ryanair has once again taken a stand in its April OTA Pirate survey, unmasking eDreams as the prime offender in overcharging Italian consumers. The survey, released on April 10th, highlights the inflated prices eDreams charges for ancillary services compared to Ryanair's own website, calling for urgent action from Italy's AGCM to shield consumers from these unjust practices.

According to the survey findings, eDreams led the overcharging brigade by marking up reserved seats by a staggering 216% and doubling the price for a 10kg baggage allowance. It's not just eDreams that has fallen under scrutiny; other OTAs such as Opodo, Gotogate, and Mytrip have been criticized for inventing service fees, some reaching up to €65, which are non-existent on Ryanair's platform.

This appeal for intervention follows the Milan Court of Appeal's recent dismissal of OTA claims against Ryanair, affirming the airline's direct sales approach as beneficial for Italian consumers through lower costs and fares. Despite this ruling, the absence of action from consumer protection agencies, particularly AGCM, has been notable and concerning.

Meanwhile, Ryanair has been proactive in forging "Approved OTA" agreements with several large travel agencies. These collaborations are set to cease the deceptive practice of screen scraping and overcharging, paving the way for transparent transactions that safeguard consumer interests. Despite these advancements, eDreams, among others, has notably refrained from signing such agreements.

Dara Brady of Ryanair voiced the need for AGCM's intervention, emphasizing the evidence presented over the past six months that points to continued OTA malpractices and the burden they place on consumers.

This unfolding situation is a pivotal moment for the travel sector in Italy, as it grapples with the balance between consumer protection and the autonomy of online travel agencies. Ryanair's persistent efforts to expose and eradicate OTA overcharges signal a strong move towards fair pricing and transparency in the travel industry, which will ultimately serve the interests of travelers seeking to explore Italy and beyond.
