In Kagoshima Prefecture, in the southwestern part of Japan, the Sakura-jima volcano has begun to erupt.
People living within a 2-kilometer radius of the volcano were warned by the local meteorological observatory about falling rocks and pyroclastic flows, Kyodo News reports.
The eruption of Sakura-jima began at 10:52 a.m. local time in the Shova crater, the first since April 2018.
According to the Kagoshima Meteorological Service, within 20 minutes, plumes of smoke and ash were visible at an altitude of 1,000 meters above the volcano.
It is noted that minor activity of the volcano was noticed on January 14. The causes of the eruption are still unknown, but the likelihood of a larger explosion is increasing.
