Scientists have discovered magnetic and thermal anomalies in a volcanic lake in New Zealand
Scientists have discovered a magnetic anomaly and a hidden hydrothermal system at the bottom of Lake Rotorua, which is located in the center of a dormant underground volcano on New Zealand's North Island.
Scientists came across these unusual phenomena when they updated and detailed the map of the lake's bottom, as reported by GNS Science.
New Zealand's tourism website states that clouds of steam drift around the lake's shore, and sulfur gives the water its "magical green-blue" color.
Scientists from the research institute have discovered eruption craters at the bottom of Lake Rotorua, as well as an ancient river and a large magnetic anomaly in its southern part.
The new map covers an area of 55 square kilometers, which is approximately 68% of the lake bed.
