Southwest Airlines Expands Red-Eye Services with 10 New Overnight Routes
Southwest Airlines is set to expand its overnight flight offerings, adding 10 new routes to its schedule, beginning March 2025. This marks a significant shift for the carrier, which, until recently, had never operated overnight services in its 53-year history. The decision to introduce these red-eye flights comes as part of Southwest's ongoing efforts to enhance its network and cater to evolving passenger needs.
The newly added overnight routes include major connections such as San Diego to Baltimore, Los Angeles to Chicago Midway, and Las Vegas to Atlanta, among others. These flights are strategically timed to maximize convenience for passengers, with all services departing late at night and arriving early the next morning. Southwest's shortest overnight route will be from Los Angeles to Houston Hobby, spanning just over 1,200 nautical miles.
Southwest's red-eye service expansion follows its initial announcement in July 2024, which introduced overnight flights on five routes set to begin on February 13, 2025. The airline's move into overnight operations is enabled by advancements in its reservation system, which, until 2017, prevented such scheduling.
Additionally, Southwest will reintroduce its Sacramento to Baltimore route on March 6, 2025, after a nearly five-year hiatus. This route will now operate as an overnight service, offering passengers an efficient option to travel across the country.
The introduction of these overnight services reflects Southwest's commitment to adapting its offerings to meet passenger demand, providing more flexibility and convenience for travelers.
