Tourists planning a trip to France in November and December should prepare for potential transport delays as the country’s largest unions plan a series of strikes. The protests are set to begin with a one-day railway strike on November 21, with unions warning of possible extended actions starting December 11 if their demands remain unmet. This period could disrupt train, plane, and even major road schedules, affecting holiday travel plans.

The strikes are being organized in protest of proposed reforms, including the privatization of the rail sector and an increased airline tax. Union leaders argue that these measures threaten job security and have been introduced without sufficient consultation, sparking discontent across the transport industry.

For those considering alternative destinations in case of strike-related disruptions, Switzerland could be an excellent choice. With its reliable transport system, stunning mountain landscapes, and famous lakes, Switzerland is a popular destination for winter travel. Tourists can visit the Zermatt and St. Moritz resorts, renowned for their top-notch ski slopes and comfortable hotels. Culture enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, from museums and galleries to historic castles in Zurich and Lucerne.

Another great option for a holiday trip is Austria. Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck are especially inviting in December, with Christmas markets offering hot mulled wine, unique souvenirs, and traditional sweets. The Austrian Alps provide excellent conditions for winter sports and attract tourists who enjoy an active lifestyle.

According to France 24, other professional groups, including civil servants and farmers, are expected to join the protests. They may stage road blockages and demonstrations, which could impact more than just transportation. This could lead to major inconveniences for tourists traveling across France, especially on popular routes and in large cities.
