Tasmania's east coast flooded after heavy rains and lightning: photos
Heavy rains and lightning strikes have flooded homes, cut power, and cut roads on the east coast of Tasmania, with the cities of St. Helens and Scamander severely affected.
The Bureau of Meteorology has downgraded the severe thunderstorm warning issued the day before, but as of Wednesday evening, some warnings were still in effect for overflowing streams and rivers, ABC News reports.
Meteorologist Luke Johnston said the area was hit by flooding mainly in the morning, with St. Helens Airport recording the highest rainfall of 145 millimeters.
Flooding blocked several roads throughout the day, including the Tasman Highway.
State Emergency Service director Mick Lowe said emergency crews responded to 29 calls for help, with two homes damaged by floodwater.
The consequences of the natural disaster continue to be eliminated.
