The government of Tenerife has announced plans for a new train network that will improve access to popular tourist destinations and reduce road congestion. This ambitious project is scheduled for completion by 2045 and will include approximately 80 kilometers of tracks.

The project envisions four main train lines-the South Line will serve the eastern coast, while the North Line will run along the TF-5 motorway, connecting Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Los Realejos, the West Line will link Adeje and Icod de los Vinos. In total, 22 kilometers of tracks will be laid through tunnels to minimize the impact on the island's landscape.

The trains will be designed to carry 450 passengers and reach speeds of up to 220 kilometers per hour. It is expected that by 2040, around 7.5 million passengers will use the new train network annually. Construction is planned to begin by the end of 2027. The total cost of the project is estimated at €5.65 billion. To simplify financing, the project will be implemented in phases.

This announcement could also give a boost to a similar railway project on nearby Gran Canaria, which has been discussed for two decades. The regional government insists that both islands, the most populated in the tourist archipelago, will start construction of their railway systems by the end of 2027.

For tourists, this means that in the future they will be able to travel quickly and conveniently between the main tourist spots on the island, avoiding road congestion. The new train project promises to significantly improve Tenerife's transportation accessibility, making it an even more attractive destination for holidays.
