A pig artist nicknamed Pigcasso, who became famous for painting abstract paintings, died at the age of nine.

The animal lived in South Africa and brought its owner more than $1 million from the sale of reproductions. The pig's owner, Joanna Lefson, said that the cause of her pet's death was chronic rheumatoid arthritis, the New York Post reports.

Before she died, the pig's hind legs failed due to calcification of the lower part of her spine.

"It is very sad that such an inspiring figure for animal welfare has passed away. But we also celebrate a life well lived and the profound difference she made," said Lefson.

Pigcasso was recognized as the most successful non-human artist in world history. In 2016, Lefson rescued a pig from a slaughterhouse when it was four weeks old. Two years later, an exhibition was organized in Cape Town, featuring Picasso's works.
