The Italian resort destination will receive an airport, which will open later this year
The opening of Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport, scheduled for July, will be an important event for one of the most beautiful parts of Italy. The hub will not be new to the Italian coast, as it has already been in operation before.
This airport, located 45 kilometers from Amalfi and 21 kilometers from Salerno, was built in 1926 but closed almost 10 years ago. With the arrival of commercial flights from the Spanish airline Volotea, the air hub will get a new lease of life, CNN writes.
The building has been used for many years as a military airport, flight school, fire station, and private airport.
In 2007, the airport was modernized to serve commercial flights. The runway was lengthened, and four check-in counters and gates were built.
In 2016, the airport finally ceased operating, and the connection to the Amalfi Coast was lost.
On July 11, 2023, Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport will be given a new lease on life. Given the significant presence of the Spanish airline Volotea in Italy, it is expected that more new tourists will arrive in the fabulous region this summer.
A new permit for commercial flights was granted in January, and the runway will be lengthened to 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) by the time it opens. Aircraft parking and other facilities will also be built on the premises.
Volotea will operate flights to four destinations, starting with Nantes in France and Cagliari in Sardinia in July, followed by Verona and Catania in September, as reported by CNN.
Although the opening is scheduled for this summer, construction will continue even after the terminals are operational. Over the next 20 years, the airport aims to serve six million passengers annually, which will help alleviate the pressure on Naples' Capodichino International Airport.
