Tourists threw €1.6 million worth of coins into the Trevi Fountain in Rome.
With €1.5 million in coins from around the world, weighing 33 tons, the annual "income" of the Trevi Fountain surpasses the profit of an average Roman museum. For instance, the National Roman Museum earns just over €1 million a year, as reported by Il Gazzettino.it.
The Trevi Fountain was designed by Niccolò Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1732-1762.
It is the largest fountain in Rome and one of the most famous fountains in the world. Every hour, the fountain is visited by 1200 people, totaling about 10.5 million people a year.
