According to a portal of the UK government, a travel agency has been shut down, leaving around 300 customers out of pocket and nearly £600,000 in refunds unpaid. Felix Travels and Tours Limited (FTT), trading as Felix Holidays, was wound up at the High Court in London on July 2nd after numerous complaints from customers who did not receive the holidays they paid for.

The agency offered comprehensive travel packages, including flights, accommodation, transfers, and extras like Disneyland tickets and ski passes. However, many customers found themselves without these services, forcing them to pay for replacements at their own expense.

Cheryl Lambert, Chief Investigator at the Insolvency Service, highlighted the gravity of the situation. Felix Travels and Tours misrepresented itself as a high-quality, trusted agency, leading to last-minute cancellations and missing services for many customers. The resulting financial distress for approximately a quarter of their clientele necessitated the company's closure to prevent further consumer harm.

FTT was established in April 2020 and operated a call center in Sri Lanka. They initially took deposits and arranged payment plans for the holiday costs. Despite these arrangements, many holidaymakers found their packages incomplete upon arrival or were informed by the call center staff to halt payments due to unfulfillable holiday packages.

Compounding the issue, FTT falsely assured customers of ATOL protection, which was not in place. A legitimate travel agency that partnered with FTT eventually cut ties and reported them to Action Fraud. Investigations by the Insolvency Service found that FTT had ceased trading by February 2023, failing to pay suppliers and operational expenses.

Furthermore, industry experts suggest that holidaymakers should always verify the ATOL status of travel agencies before making bookings. ATOL (Air Travel Organiser's Licence) protection ensures customers are financially protected and can receive refunds if their travel company ceases trading.

Additionally, the company owes an estimated £7,000 to trade suppliers and did not cooperate with investigators, failing to provide up-to-date accounts. The Official Receiver has been appointed as the liquidator for Felix Travels and Tours Limited.

This case serves as a stark reminder for holidaymakers to verify the credibility and insurance coverage of travel agencies to avoid similar predicaments in the future.
