Travel Alert: UK Advises Caution for Italy-Bound Travelers Due to Volcanic Risks
The UK Foreign Office has issued a new travel alert for Italy-bound travelers, urging caution due to rising volcanic risks following recent seismic activity near Naples.
In light of a significant seismic event near Naples this past Monday, the British Foreign Office has revised its travel guidelines for Italy. This update comes just in time for the May half-term, cautioning travelers about potential volcanic hazards.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has specifically highlighted the presence of multiple active volcanoes in southern Italy. They have updated emergency procedures for Mount Vesuvius and the Phlegraean Fields, areas that have experienced ongoing seismic activity, including several tremors in 2024.
UK travelers in Italy are advised to follow local authority directives in the event of a volcanic eruption. The FCDO emphasizes the importance of consulting the Italian government’s recommendations regarding volcanic emergencies to ensure safety.
The Italian Civil Protection Department provides detailed protocols for various volcanic dangers, including lava flows, explosive projectiles, and landslides. These guidelines are available online and offer essential safety information for those in the affected areas.
This alert follows Naples experiencing its most severe earthquake in a decade, with a magnitude of 4.4, occurring at a depth of approximately 1.6 miles. The quake, felt as late as 8 pm local time (6 pm GMT), led to numerous aftershocks, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
The earthquake impacted the area around the Phlegraean Fields caldera, situated between Naples and Pozzuoli and near Mount Vesuvius. Over 150 seismic events were recorded from Monday evening into early Tuesday, raising concerns about volcanic activity in the region.
Travelers are reminded that minor seismic events are common in Italy. The UK Foreign Office advises checking the Italian Civil Protection Department’s website for safety information and the FCDO’s website for current travel advisories before any trip.
