Travel Companions Assist Visually Impaired Rail Travelers
Transport for Wales has launched a new initiative to support visually impaired individuals traveling by rail. The program introduces Travel Companions at key stations, including Cardiff Central, Chester, Swansea, Newport, and Shrewsbury.
In Swansea, Guide Dogs Cymru met with the Travel Companion team this month to learn about their roles. The initiative aims to boost confidence for those with visual impairments.
Ken Skates, the Cabinet Secretary for North Wales and Transport, praised the program, highlighting the crucial support it provides. Andrea Gordon, External Affairs Manager for Guide Dogs Cymru, emphasized the importance of public transport for people with sight loss, noting that the scheme enhances their travel experience.
A new office at Swansea Railway Station offers assistance from 8 am to 8 pm daily. This facility provides guidance on booking tickets, reservations, journey assistance, and handling disruptions.
Despite improvements in train accessibility, only 13% of surveyed disabled rail users feel confident using the train. Suzanne Churchouse, a Travel Companion in Swansea, described the role as rewarding, underscoring the tailored support each customer needs.
Travel Companions have undergone sighted guide training with Guide Dogs. This initiative is part of Transport for Wales' 'Confident Traveller' scheme, aimed at helping those who infrequently use trains or need additional support.
