As the July 4 holidays approach, the United States Transport Security Administration (TSA) has issued a crucial reminder to passengers about the prohibition of dangerous goods in carry-on and checked baggage. With a busy travel period anticipated, the TSA has stressed the importance of adhering to these safety guidelines to ensure smooth and safe travel for everyone.

In a series of tweets from TSA Pacific, the administration highlighted various prohibited items that passengers have recently attempted to bring aboard, including fireworks and replica guns. The TSA made it clear that such items are strictly forbidden in both carry-on luggage and checked baggage.

The TSA reiterated that passengers can only transport ammunition and unloaded firearms in a locked, hard-sided container as checked baggage. Any form of firearm, whether loaded or unloaded, and including replica guns, must be transported in checked baggage only.

This year's July 4 travel period is expected to be record-breaking in terms of passenger volume. The TSA at Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) has reported a significant increase in checkpoint volumes and is preparing for heightened passenger traffic throughout the summer. Bart Johnson, the TSA's Federal Security Director for 13 airports in Upstate New York, emphasized the agency's readiness to handle the increased travel volumes with close coordination with airport, airline, and travel partners.

Nationwide, the TSA expects to screen over 16.2 million people between July 3 and July 8, marking a 5.5% increase from the same period in 2023. July 7 is projected to be the peak day, with more than 3 million travelers passing through TSA checkpoints across 434 airports in the US.

When compared to pre-pandemic levels, the aviation landscape has shifted. According to aviation analytics company Cirium, US airlines have scheduled 166,597 weekly domestic departures in July 2024, a 6.2% reduction from July 2019. However, despite the decrease in weekly flights, the number of weekly seats and available seat kilometers (ASK) on US domestic routes has increased by 6.8% and 8.6%, respectively. This July, airlines are offering over 21.9 million weekly seats, compared to 20.5 million in July 2019.

The TSA's reminders and preparations are aimed at ensuring a safe and efficient travel experience for passengers during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. By adhering to the guidelines and avoiding the transportation of dangerous goods, travelers can contribute to a safer environment for everyone.
