U.S. airlines are gearing up for an unprecedented surge in passenger numbers during the Thanksgiving travel period, with Airlines for America (A4A) projecting over 31 million passengers between November 22 and December 2. This marks a new record for Thanksgiving travel, surpassing the nearly 29 million passengers in 2022 and pre-pandemic levels of 28 million in 2019.

Airlines will accommodate this growing demand by operating with 150,000 additional seats daily compared to last year's holiday season. On average, 2.8 million passengers are expected to fly each day, a 5% increase from 2022. The busiest travel days are predicted to be Wednesday, November 27, and Sunday, December 1, with over 3 million passengers expected each day.

Rebecca Spicer, A4A’s Senior Vice President of Communications, highlighted the extensive preparations made by airlines to ensure safe and efficient travel. "We expect this Thanksgiving season to be the busiest on record, and U.S. airlines have been preparing for months to get travelers and cargo safely and efficiently to their destinations," she said, expressing gratitude for the efforts of over one million airline employees.

To enhance the travel experience, airlines have invested significantly in technology. Travelers are encouraged to download their carrier’s app for real-time updates on flights, baggage tracking, and access to in-flight entertainment. For cargo services, tracking tools are in place to ensure timely delivery of holiday packages. These advancements aim to minimize travel disruptions and improve overall convenience during the holiday rush.

Additionally, travelers are reminded to prepare for upcoming federal identification requirements. Starting May 7, 2025, passengers must have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or other approved identification for domestic flights. Ensuring compliance now will help avoid complications in the future.

With record-breaking travel numbers anticipated, U.S. airlines are committed to delivering a seamless and efficient experience for millions of passengers this Thanksgiving season.
