Vietnam is changing the rules for tourists from around the world
Vietnamese authorities are expanding the list of countries with visa-free travel. Since mid-August 2023, Vietnam has been issuing e-visas to citizens of all countries, extending the duration from 30 to 90 days with unlimited entry.
According to Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, negotiations are underway with 15 countries for mutual visa exemption. Additionally, negotiations are ongoing with 80 countries for the mutual abolition of visas for diplomatic passports, as reported by Vietnamnet.
It is emphasized that Vietnam has recently become a favored tourist destination. Consequently, the country has unilaterally or through agreements canceled visas for some countries to attract more tourists. However, very few countries provide visa waivers to Vietnamese citizens, making visa acquisition challenging.
In the current trend of openness and deep integration, not only foreigners travel to Vietnam, but Vietnamese citizens also seek opportunities abroad. Therefore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is collaborating with relevant authorities to simplify entry and exit procedures.
Apart from the 13 countries that have unilaterally abolished visa requirements, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is negotiating visa waivers with 15 countries to facilitate entry and exit. Furthermore, negotiations are ongoing with 80 countries for the mutual abolition of diplomatic visas, aiming to ease travel abroad for ministry heads and local authorities.
Meanwhile, countries in the region with strategies to attract tourists have expanded their visa programs. Singapore exempts 164 countries from visas, Malaysia exempts 162, the Philippines exempts 157, and Thailand exempts 64.
"This creates intense competition for Vietnam. Should the Ministry of Foreign Affairs consider unilaterally abolishing visas for tourists from developed countries with high incomes and low crime rates?" local officials suggest.
It is added that various factors are required to promote tourism, with visas being an essential aspect. Following amendments to the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners, both foreign nationals and Vietnamese citizens enjoy more favorable conditions.
