Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is a large-scale and magnificent event that has become a symbol of Brazilian culture. Every year, before the start of Catholic Lent, the city turns into a playground for exciting processions and lavish costume parades. The main feature of Carnival in Rio is the sambodromes, huge stadiums where samba schools present their unique choreographies and costumes in front of huge crowds of spectators.

The Carnival also features competitions for the title of Carnival King and Queen.
