WestJet Cancels Flights Ahead of Planned Strike by Maintenance Engineers
WestJet Airlines has begun cancelling flights in response to a potential strike by its Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and other Technical Operations employees, set to commence on Friday, June 28 at 5:30 p.m. MT. This preemptive move aims to safely park aircraft and ensure proactive communication, preventing the stranding of passengers and crew.
The decision to cancel flights follows the union's strike notice, despite WestJet presenting the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) with an industry-leading agreement. The union's timing is seen as an effort to force contract negotiations under pressure, risking disruption for over 250,000 travelers during the busy July long weekend.
WestJet's President and COO, Diederik Pen, expressed the airline's regret over the impact on passengers and communities reliant on their services. He emphasized the weight of this decision, marking it as the second time in just over a week that flight cancellations have been necessary due to strike threats.
Over the next 48 hours, WestJet will implement a phased approach to park aircraft safely. This measured strategy will result in flight cancellations designed to mitigate further disruption and manage resources efficiently, ensuring minimal impact on passengers as the strike date approaches.
