What the oldest pub in Ireland, which is more than 1,100 years old, looks like
The Irish value history, so they take great care of their monuments and are proud of them. One of the most popular places in the country is the Seán Bar pub in Athlone, which is more than 1,100 years old.
This place is considered the oldest pub in the whole of Ireland. It has recently claimed the title of the oldest establishment in the world. According to Irish Central, the owner of the pub, Paul Donovan, has applied to be recognized as the absolute champion.
The establishment was founded on the same site as a tavern that has been feeding and watering people since the 900s AD. Its long history, which has been going on for about 1,115 years, makes it the oldest bar not only in Ireland but also in the whole of Europe.
As proof, the pub even has a Guinness World Records certificate.
In 2014, Seán's Bar won the oldest pub title in Britain, leaving rivals Bingley Arms and North Leeds behind as they were founded only in 953.
Many famous people have spent time here, such as the band U2 or the famous TV villain Ewing Jr. played by actor Larry Hegman.
Photos of famous visitors still hang on the wall, along with a piece of the wall that has a "wicker and vine" structure, confirming the antiquity of the establishment.
Anyone can visit this place. In addition to an interesting history, Seán Bar also offers a decent menu, a beautiful location and a cosy atmosphere.
