Whitelaws Ends Coach Services to Focus on Bus Operations
Whitelaws, a Scottish transportation operator, has announced it will cease its coach services to concentrate on its bus operations. This decision, described as "strategic and operational," comes after facing significant challenges in the coach sector.
The company's Managing Director, Sandra Whitelaw, stated that the coach services could no longer contribute positively to the business due to factors such as the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, staff shortages, rising costs, regulatory pressures, and competition from lower-quality operators.
Despite efforts to address these issues, including initiatives like "PCV scholarships," paid-for training and tests, recruitment bonuses, participation in the Routes to Work scheme, and offering competitive wages, the company decided to focus solely on bus services. This transition aims to ensure the future stability of the business and its employees. Notably, no jobs will be lost due to this shift, and Whitelaws has significantly invested in a modern bus fleet, making it one of the newest in the UK.
For travelers, this change means a potential reduction in coach travel options within Scotland. Those who relied on Whitelaws for long-distance coach journeys will need to seek alternative providers. However, for local commuters and travelers within Lanarkshire, the news is positive. Whitelaws plans to enhance its local bus services, promising modern, high-quality transportation across the region.
Sandra Whitelaw emphasized the company's commitment to providing excellent public transport services and a fair working environment for its employees. She acknowledged the disappointment in withdrawing from coach operations but highlighted that this decision will allow Whitelaws to invest more in their bus services, ensuring continuous improvement and reliability for passengers.
