You Can Now Renew US Passports Online
The US State Department has launched a public beta testing phase for a new online passport renewal system, making it easier for travelers to renew their passports without the need for mailing in paper applications. This new system aims to streamline the renewal process and improve efficiency for US citizens.
A Growing Program
The online renewal link is now live on the State Department's website. However, due to the beta release, the number of daily applications will be limited to ensure the system functions smoothly. The renewal window opens at 12:00 Eastern Time each day and closes once the daily quota is reached. This phased rollout is designed to monitor the system’s performance in real time and address any issues before a full-scale launch.
Applicants can start their application and complete it within 30 days, providing flexibility in the renewal process.
How to Renew Your Passport Online
Confirm You Meet the Requirements
To renew online, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- The passport being renewed is or was valid for 10 years, and the applicant is 25 years or older.
- The passport was issued between 2009 and 2015, or between 9 and 15 years before the application date.
- No changes to name, gender, date of birth, or place of birth.
- Not traveling internationally for at least eight weeks from the application date.
- Applying for a regular (tourist) passport.
- Residing in the United States (state or territory).
- The current passport is in good condition and has not been reported lost or stolen.
- Payment can be made via credit or debit card.
- Able to upload a digital passport photo.
- Acknowledge that the current passport will be canceled upon submission.
Create an Account
Applicants must create a MyTravelGov account through the Login.gov platform. Many people may already have an account if they use other government services like Veterans Affairs.
Start Your Application
After creating an account, users can begin their application by clicking the "Renew Your Passport" button. They will need to enter personal information as it appears on the current passport, which must be expiring within one year or have been expired for less than five years.
Confirm and Pay
If the renewal application meets all the requirements, applicants will be prompted to upload a digital photo in .JPEG format and pay the standard fees: $130 for a passport book, $30 for a passport card, or $160 for both. Applicants can only renew their current product type online.
Processing Time
The processing time for online renewals is estimated to be 6-8 weeks, similar to the routine processing time for mail applications. Expedited or urgent renewal services are not yet available online, so those needing urgent renewals should schedule an appointment at a passport agency or center.
