Long-haul flights can be daunting, but with the right strategies, they can become more manageable. Kris Major, a British flight attendant with 25 years of experience, shares his top tips for enduring these lengthy journeys.

Major suggests eating before boarding a night flight to maximize sleep. This is crucial for shorter long-haul flights, like those from New York to London, where sleep time is limited. Seasoned travelers often eat before boarding and sleep as soon as they settle in. While this isn't always feasible due to airport constraints, utilizing airport lounge facilities for a meal can help you rest more on the flight.

Long-haul flights typically offer multiple meals. Major advises passengers to eat according to their schedule and hunger, rather than adhering strictly to the airline's meal times. If you're exhausted, prioritize sleep over eating.

While airlines provide pillows, Major recommends bringing your own eye mask, travel pillow, and blanket for added comfort. Having your own gear ensures you're prepared, especially if airline supplies run out.

If sleep eludes you, Major advises against forcing it. Instead, relax with a movie or book. However, consider your activities upon landing—if you need to be alert, try to rest as much as possible.

Top tip for feeling refreshed after sleeping on a plane is simple: clean your teeth. Flight attendants also use their short breaks to wash up and change into fresh clothes, which helps them feel revitalized.

Movement is crucial on long flights. Major recommends wiggling your toes and moving your legs even while seated. If possible, get up and walk around to improve circulation. Remove your shoes on long-haul flights for comfort and circulation. Don’t worry, flight attendants don’t mind, as long as passengers maintain good hygiene. However, be mindful of where you place your feet to avoid tripping others in the aisle.
