Located in New Jersey, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) serves as NYC's second major international airport, offering flights to destinations such as Paris, London, and Frankfurt. With a high demand for access to and from the airport, here are several public transport options available.

NJ Transit Local Train Service

Frequent train departures from downtown Manhattan offer convenient access to the airport. Passengers can head to New York Penn Station, which is served by subway lines 1, 2, 3, A, C, and E, as well as lines N, Q, R, W, B, D, F, and M. The Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast lines take around 30 minutes to reach EWR from Penn Station. Fares are distance-based, with more information available on the NJ Transit website.

Amtrak National Train Service

For those traveling from outside the New York City area, Amtrak provides a convenient option with frequent trains to and from cities such as Boston, Norfolk, and Washington, DC. For example, an economy seat from Washington, DC, to EWR can cost between $130 and $170 when booked last minute. While this may not be the most economical choice, it offers the convenience of direct rail access to the airport.

AirTrain from EWR Station to All Terminals

AirTrain Newark is a 3-mile (4.8 km) monorail system connecting all terminals and multiple parking facilities at EWR to the Newark Liberty International Airport Station on the Northeast Corridor (NEC). This allows seamless transfers to Amtrak and NJ Transit's Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast lines. The AirTrain, which commenced operations in 1996 and is set for replacement by the mid-to-late 2020s, costs a flat fee of around $8.

Yellow Cab - The NYC Experience

Although not strictly public transportation, hailing a cab from any location in New York City to Newark Airport offers a quintessential New York experience. The average taxi fare from EWR to Manhattan is $62, excluding tolls and gratuity. This option provides the convenience of a private car service while capturing the essence of New York City's iconic yellow taxis.

BLADE Helicopter Service

For a unique and luxurious travel experience, BLADE offers helicopter departures from the Manhattan Heliport to all NYC airports. This service, priced between $150 and $200, allows passengers to avoid city traffic and enjoy stunning aerial views of New York City. Available for departures between 15:00 and 22:00 from July 12th - 18th and July 28th - August 3rd, the one-hour Uber Cruise departs every 20 minutes from Pont Marie in Central Paris.

Best Transportation Option Based on Cost

For cost-conscious travelers, NJ Transit or the AirTrain are the most economical options for traveling to EWR. NJ Transit's fare is distance-based and typically cheaper than other modes of transportation. The AirTrain, with a flat fee of about $8, is also an affordable choice. In comparison, taxi rides range from $50 to $75, excluding tolls and gratuity, while Amtrak fares and BLADE services are more expensive.

Best Experience

For a memorable travel experience, the BLADE helicopter service is unparalleled. Despite being the most expensive option, it offers a unique and luxurious journey from downtown Manhattan to EWR, providing breathtaking views of New York City and avoiding traffic congestion. This option stands out for those seeking a distinctive and stylish way to conclude their visit to the Big Apple.
