On July 26th, 2024, an Air France flight declared an emergency shortly after taking off from Paris Charles De Gaulle (CDG). The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, operating as Flight 226 to Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi, returned to CDG and landed safely within two hours of departure due to hydraulic failure.

Flight 226 experienced a delayed departure, initially scheduled for 10:05 local time but eventually taking off at 14:19. Despite the late start, the aircraft's first 24 minutes were smooth until the crew detected a hydraulic system issue, prompting an emergency declaration.

After identifying the problem, the flight crew descended the aircraft to 24,000 feet and held over Strasbourg, France, for 27 minutes to troubleshoot and burn fuel. Following this, the aircraft returned to CDG and landed without incident.

Air France confirmed that the issue involved a hydraulic pump but assured that the aircraft's airworthiness was not compromised. Passengers were rerouted as quickly as possible, and the aircraft's condition was thoroughly examined.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in question, registered as F-HRBJ, is relatively new, delivered in July 2020. The aircraft has logged 17,901 flight hours and 2,065 flight cycles as of April 2024, indicating that the hydraulic issue was likely a standard component failure rather than a result of poor quality control.

Air France's swift response and the aircraft's safe return highlight the robustness of modern aviation safety protocols and the effectiveness of the airline's emergency procedures.
