Seattle-based Alaska Airlines is doubling down on its commitment to safety and efficiency by renewing its partnership with Air Space Intelligence (ASI). This collaboration aims to optimize flight routes using artificial intelligence (AI) and has already significantly reduced the airline's fuel consumption and emissions.

Over the past four years, ASI’s Flyways AI platform has played a crucial role in Alaska Airlines' operations, helping to optimize over half of the carrier’s flights on average. In 2023 alone, the airline saved more than 1.2 million gallons of fuel, marking a significant milestone in its sustainability efforts.

Flyways AI uses advanced algorithms and machine learning to analyze various data points, including weather, wind conditions, and airspace constraints, to recommend the most efficient and safest routes for pilots and dispatchers. These recommendations not only comply with air traffic control regulations but also aim to minimize flight time, reduce fuel consumption, and avoid potential delays caused by air traffic congestion.

Alaska Airlines’ Managing Director of Network Operations Control, Captain Bret Peyton, highlighted the importance of this technology in navigating unpredictable factors such as weather and air traffic. He emphasized that Flyways AI provides the airline with the confidence and flexibility needed to make informed decisions, ultimately enhancing service quality for passengers.

The ongoing partnership with ASI aligns with Alaska Airlines' broader goals of becoming the most fuel-efficient U.S. airline by 2025 and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The airline’s focus on sustainability is further supported by its use of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 and MAX 9, which are among the most fuel-efficient aircraft in its fleet.

Alaska Airlines is eager to continue its work with ASI, aiming to expand the use of Flyways AI across its network and explore additional AI-driven innovations to enhance operations. The airline views this technology as a transformative tool that benefits passengers, employees, and the environment alike.
