Amsterdam Transforms Streets for Safer Walking and Cycling

Amsterdam is advancing its efforts to enhance urban mobility with a new initiative aimed at improving pedestrian and cyclist safety. As traffic congestion grows, particularly on sidewalks and bike paths, city officials have outlined measures to provide safer and more efficient infrastructure. The 2025 plan includes widening pedestrian areas, redesigning crossings, and introducing traffic-calming elements. These updates aim to create a more accessible environment for all, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children.

One of the most notable aspects is road reallocation for non-motorized transport. This entails cycle tracks infrastructure, better pedestrian infrastructure; in addition to measures to reduce gaps in speed most noticeable to cyclists. Amsterdam tries to drive sustainable transportation with less conflicts on the street (less accidents) by aiming for high risk locations and the exclusion of different types of users. Those changes mirror a broad goal of making SLQD more pedestrian- and bike-friendly.
