Amsterdam's Winter Magic: Christmas Tree Lighting and Light Festival Highlights
On Saturday, December 14, Dam Square in Amsterdam will host the ceremonial lighting of the traditional Christmas tree. The event will begin at 5:30 PM with performances by musical groups, including the Amsterdams Smartlappenkoor, The Gospel Queens, and students from the Pact+ vocational school. At 6:00 PM, over 40,000 energy-efficient LED lights will illuminate the tree for the first time. Visitors can enjoy the festive atmosphere, listen to live music, and savor free hot chocolate while supplies last.
As always, the festive tree will serve as the centerpiece of the winter holiday season on Dam Square, lighting up daily according to a schedule designed to save energy. Normally installed right after the Sinterklaas holiday, this year's tree placement was delayed. After the holiday period, the tree will be relocated to Artis Zoo.
The festive atmosphere on Dam Square is just one part of Amsterdam's winter charm, seamlessly blending tradition with the contemporary artistry of the Amsterdam Light Festival. It began in November and will run until January 19 next year, transforming the city’s canals and streets into a vibrant exhibition of light installations. This year’s event, themed "Rituals," marks its tenth anniversary. Visitors can enjoy the dazzling displays in the Amsterdam Centre-East district daily from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM. A highlight of the festival is the 6.5-kilometer interactive route, offering insights into art, history, and the city’s natural surroundings through messages from the creative director.
Traveling to Amsterdam is simple, with EasyJet flights available from London or a direct Eurostar train connecting London to Amsterdam in just over three and a half hours. Festival organizers recommend booking tickets in advance to secure a convenient time slot. The festival provides an exceptional opportunity to spend winter days combining aesthetic enjoyment with a deeper appreciation of Amsterdam’s rich culture.
Amsterdam's winter celebrations offer a unique blend of tradition, art, and culture, making it a must-visit destination during the holiday season. From the mesmerizing illumination of the Christmas tree on Dam Square to the breathtaking displays of the Amsterdam Light Festival, the city promises unforgettable experiences for visitors of all ages.
