Amtrak has completed $3.5 million in accessibility upgrades at the Newbern-Dyersburg Station in West Tennessee, significantly improving the travel experience for its passengers. The station, located on the route of the Amtrak City of New Orleans, which runs between Chicago and New Orleans, now features a host of new amenities designed to accommodate all travelers, including those with disabilities.

The improvements include a new 350-foot platform with accessibility features, new accessible parking, sloped walkways, safety barriers, and energy-efficient LED lighting. Additionally, a new wheelchair lift with a secure enclosure and updated signage has been installed, enhancing the station's functionality and user-friendliness.

Dr. David Handera, Amtrak Vice President for Accessibility, Stations, and Facilities, highlighted the importance of these upgrades at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by state tourism commissioner Mark Ezell and Newbern Mayor Pam Mabry. Handera emphasized that the project aligns with Amtrak's broader goal of making all its stations welcoming and comfortable for every customer.

The Newbern-Dyersburg Station, which houses the Newbern Depot & Railroad Museum, an Amtrak waiting room, and a grand room for public events, has integrated these modern upgrades with the station's historic elements, ensuring a blend of tradition and modernity. Local subcontractors were heavily involved in the renovation, contributing to the community’s economy.

These enhancements are part of Amtrak’s larger Accessible Stations Program, which has seen more than $870 million invested in station upgrades since 2011, benefiting 123 stations nationwide. This ongoing initiative aims to ensure 100% accessibility across Amtrak’s National Network by 2029, with 30 more stations slated for improvements this fiscal year.
