Amtrak Downeaster Resumes Seasonal Service to Old Orchard Beach

The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPRA) announced the commencement of the Amtrak Downeaster seasonal service to Old Orchard Beach. This popular destination offers a variety of attractions within walking distance from the train platform, including expansive beaches, amusement parks, and the famous pier fries.

Since 2020, the Amtrak Downeaster has seen a 38% increase in ridership to Old Orchard Beach, and a 148% increase since the service began in 2002. This highlights the growing popularity of the train service among travelers seeking convenient and enjoyable transportation options.

Downeaster adult fares within Maine are highly affordable, ranging from $3 to $11 one-way. Seniors and children receive a 50% discount daily, and the Discover Maine Rail Pass offers 10 one-way trips for $19 within a week, making it an attractive option for both locals and visitors.

Marketing Director Taylor Belanger emphasized the convenience of the Downeaster service, which stops in various walkable destinations, including Freeport, Saco, and Brunswick. This pass provides flexibility for those looking to explore multiple locations without the hassle of driving and parking. The Discover Maine Rail Pass is available through all Amtrak distribution channels, including online, mobile app, station kiosks, and call centers.

Additionally, as of May 20, Downeaster Trains 689/699/1689 will operate as L stops at all stations north of Woburn. An L-Stop allows the train to depart up to 10 minutes early if there are no reserved passengers, encouraging passengers to make reservations on late-night trains to avoid missing their journey.

This seasonal service resumption and the new operational changes reflect NNEPRA’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience for its passengers, offering greater convenience and flexibility for both tourists and locals alike.
