Next week, caterers on the Avanti West Coast trains will begin a strike due to severe working conditions. The action, organized by the RMT union, comes in response to rosters imposed by the company that are causing significant stress and fatigue among staff. This strike is set to commence on Friday, June 7, and highlights ongoing tensions within the company.

Caterers are particularly distressed by last-minute changes to their shift patterns, job cuts, and enforced overtime. These issues have severely disrupted employees' ability to plan personal activities, attend medical appointments, and maintain a work-life balance. The workforce's well-being has been notably affected, leading to this decisive strike action.

Avanti West Coast has faced numerous industrial disputes since it took over the West Coast Main Line franchise from Virgin. The company's management practices have been widely criticized for their impact on staff welfare. The latest strike is a culmination of these ongoing issues.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch criticized Avanti West Coast for what he described as an "abysmal disregard for the welfare of its staff." He emphasized that the essential catering staff have been subjected to relentless job cuts, erratic schedules, and compulsory overtime, leading to high levels of stress and fatigue. Lynch condemned the management's approach, stating there is no logical reason for these detrimental practices.

The strike aims to address these grievances and push for a more balanced and fair working environment for the caterers. As the situation unfolds, travelers on the West Coast Main Line may face disruptions, highlighting the broader impact of the company's management strategies on its operations and customer service.
