Barnstaple Railway Station is set to undergo significant changes aimed at making travel easier and more convenient for passengers transferring between buses and trains. From May 22 to June 26, travelers are invited to view and provide feedback on the proposed plans via the Have Your Say website.

The initiative, designed to enhance bus-rail integration at the station, aims to streamline the travel experience for over 500,000 annual passengers. The proposals include an upgraded bus stop directly outside the main entrance, equipped with shelters and real-time information screens. Additionally, a new bus access on Sticklepath Terrace will allow buses to avoid traffic on Station Road when heading towards Barnstaple town center, making travel quicker and more efficient.

These changes are being developed in partnership with Network Rail and Great Western Railway. The goal is to simplify the road layout around the station, making it easier for travelers to access the station and bus stop, thus providing an improved gateway to Barnstaple. This will make the transition between different modes of transport smoother, ensuring that visitors and locals alike can enjoy a hassle-free journey.

Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, emphasized the travel benefits, saying, "By improving facilities, we hope to make traveling by bus from Barnstaple Station easier and a more attractive option. Encouraging public transport use is crucial for reducing carbon emissions and achieving our net zero targets."

Local county councilor Caroline Leaver added, "Moving the bus stop to immediately outside the station entrance will significantly improve accessibility. Currently, passengers have to navigate four lanes of traffic or walk towards Tesco. The proposed improvements will modernize facilities for people in Barnstaple and North Devon, encouraging the use of public transport and bikes over cars. This will make it easier for both residents and tourists to explore the area using sustainable travel options."

For travelers, these upgrades mean a more seamless journey experience. With direct and easy access to buses right at the station entrance, tourists can quickly hop onto a bus to explore Barnstaple and its surroundings without the hassle of crossing busy roads or searching for transportation. The real-time information screens will keep travelers updated on bus schedules, reducing wait times and improving overall travel efficiency. These improvements will make Barnstaple a more attractive destination for visitors, promoting the use of eco-friendly transport options.

The project is funded by government grants awarded to Devon County Council following the publication of its Bus Services Improvement Plan. This plan outlines strategies to enhance bus services and infrastructure. The initiative also supports the planned introduction of electric buses in North Devon and Torridge, funded through the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas scheme.

Public feedback is essential to ensure the proposed changes meet the community’s needs. Travelers are encouraged to participate in the consultation and share their thoughts on how these improvements will enhance their travel experience.
