In an exciting development for the scientific community, the British High Commission to Canada has announced a unique opportunity for British and Canadian researchers. A select group is invited to participate in a one-week expedition aboard an ice-capable ship traversing the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This event, scheduled for mid-July 2024, promises participants a rare glimpse into the life of Arctic researchers and the chance to engage in a blend of scientific and cultural exchanges.

Starting from Québec City and concluding in St. John’s, Newfoundland, this journey is designed for researchers who are nearing the completion of their PhD or Master's degree, or those who have graduated within the past three years. Participants will delve into a program rich in educational and research opportunities, including independent research, knowledge exchange, and even scheduled writing time aboard the ship.

The expedition's onboard program is equally compelling, featuring interactions with the ship's crew of hydrologists, navigators, and professional mariners. Furthermore, participants will have the opportunity to observe various marine wildlife and attend an evening reception with some of Canada’s leading Arctic researchers. These activities are tailored to enrich the participants' understanding of Arctic environments and research methodologies.

David Barnes, Head of the UK in Canada Science, Climate and Energy Team, emphasizes the importance of this program for budding researchers focused on Arctic studies. He encourages eligible candidates to seize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience life at sea and to foster connections that span the Atlantic.

The voyage not only highlights the ongoing collaboration between the UK and Canada in Arctic research but also demonstrates a commitment to enhancing scientific understanding and cooperation. The journey from Québec City to St. John’s is not just a passage through icy waters but a voyage towards greater scientific collaboration and mutual learning between two nations.
