UK holidaymakers are returning from their trips with £429 million left unspent on pre-paid travel cards. This marks a significant increase from the £369 million that remained on these cards after holidays last year, according to new research.

The study found that 13 percent of British travelers use pre-paid cards abroad, leading to millions of holidaymakers wasting part of their savings. These travelers often face additional fees and poor exchange rates to convert leftover funds back into sterling or simply forget about these unused funds entirely.

James Lynn, an expert in travel finance, commented that UK travelers are losing a substantial portion of their holiday savings by using pre-paid cards, which can be costly and inconvenient. He highlighted that these cards come with high fees and require the hassle of frequent top-ups.

A third of UK holidaymakers who use pre-paid cards believe these options offer better exchange rates when spending abroad. Additionally, nearly half of the users think that pre-paid cards help with budget management. However, the research showed that travelers return with an average of £87 still on these cards, and over a quarter have more than £100 left unspent after their holiday.

For parents with school-aged children, the average amount remaining on pre-paid cards rises to £109, with 42 percent returning with over £100 left over. This indicates a significant portion of travel funds being left unused, particularly among families.

The challenge of accurately calculating holiday spending money often leads to overloading pre-paid cards. This results in holidaymakers needing to withdraw cash from expensive ATMs and facing high bank charges when they have to rely on their bank cards. Many people mistakenly believe that pre-paid cards are the best solution for spending money abroad, despite more secure and cost-effective options being available.

Travelers are encouraged to adopt smarter spending habits to avoid excessive foreign exchange fees and better manage their holiday finances. This approach can help secure better deals on travel expenses, similar to those obtained for flights and accommodation.
