Travelers in the South West of England are facing significant disruptions due to a 48-hour strike by bus workers at First South West. Over 300 bus workers, represented by the union RMT, have set up picket lines in key locations including Penzance, Taunton, and Camborne, causing widespread service interruptions.

The strike has been initiated in response to the failure of First South West to offer satisfactory pay increases to its employees. This action comes despite the parent company, First Group, reporting a significant rise in pre-tax profits to £139 million last year and announcing a 45% increase in dividends for 2024. Bus workers feel their demands for fair compensation are being ignored amid these financial gains.

For travelers, the strike means potential delays and cancellations on bus routes, affecting both daily commuters and tourists. Key destinations like St Michael's Mount in Penzance, the Museum of Somerset in Taunton, and the historical mining sites in Camborne might be harder to reach. Alternative transportation methods and careful planning are recommended to minimize disruption.

Penzance, known for its scenic beauty and proximity to St Michael's Mount, remains a top destination despite the strike. Visitors can explore its art galleries, gardens, and harbor on foot or via alternative transport. The town's rich history and vibrant cultural scene continue to attract tourists even amid travel challenges.

In Taunton, the strike affects access to historical and natural attractions. The Museum of Somerset, located in Taunton Castle, and the nearby Quantock Hills offer rich experiences for visitors. Despite potential transport issues, these sites can still be enjoyed with proper planning.

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch has criticized First South West for neglecting employee welfare and attempting to divide the workforce with inadequate pay offers. He affirmed that the strike would continue until fair pay demands are met. Travelers are advised to stay updated on service changes and consider alternative travel options to navigate the disruptions.
