Bus Strike Threatens Spring Travel Plans in Telford

Visitors to Telford may soon face difficulties getting around, as more than 100 local bus drivers are voting on whether to strike in a dispute over pay. The workers, employed by Arriva Midlands, are demanding higher wages after more than a year without any raise. The vote, organised by the Unite union, will conclude on 17 April, with potential walkouts beginning in early May if no agreement is reached.

Currently, drivers are paid £13.36 per hour—significantly less than the West Midlands average of £14.93. With a history of below-inflation pay increases and long shifts that include evenings and weekends, workers say they’ve reached a breaking point. The union maintains that the company could still prevent industrial action by offering a fair pay deal. Otherwise, local bus operations may be brought to a standstill.

Strike action will inevitably lead to severe disruption across the local bus network, however this is a dispute entirely of Arriva’s own making

For travellers planning spring trips to Telford, a potential strike could limit access to the town's popular attractions. Ironbridge Gorge, The Wrekin and other rural gems are connected by useful bus routes. Without regular bus services, those without private transport may struggle to reach these sites, particularly during weekends and holidays when many visitors arrive.

To prepare for disruptions, tourists are encouraged to monitor local news and transport announcements closely. Flexible travel plans, alternative transport such as taxis or train services, and accommodation near major attractions could help reduce inconvenience. Travellers who rely on public transport should be especially cautious about day trips that depend on timely bus connections.

For those visiting Telford in the coming weeks, the strike vote signals a broader issue that extends beyond a single region—it reflects growing instability in local transport networks. Until a resolution is reached, visitors may need to adapt quickly and plan ahead to avoid delays and enjoy what the area has to offer.
