Ongoing pay negotiations between First South West and the RMT union, affecting bus services in Cornwall and Somerset, have yet to reach a resolution. Discussions held on August 16 focused on finding a compromise that meets staff demands without disrupting the vital public transport network in these popular tourist regions.

The latest talks saw both sides exchange proposals, with the bus operator promising to review suggestions made by the union. A revised offer will be considered during the next meeting scheduled for Friday. While negotiations continue, concerns are growing over potential strikes if an agreement is not reached soon.

For travelers visiting Cornwall and Somerset, the uncertainty surrounding bus operations could lead to significant disruptions. The affected areas are heavily reliant on public transport, especially during the peak summer travel season when visitors flock to the region’s coastal towns and tourist hotspots. Delays or cancellations could leave tourists stranded or force them to seek alternative transport, adding to travel expenses and inconvenience.

The bus operator has assured the public that they are working to avoid service interruptions, emphasizing their commitment to balancing employee demands with service continuity. However, with no clear resolution in sight, travelers are advised to keep an eye on developments and plan their journeys accordingly.

This recent negotiation follows a series of strikes earlier in August, which caused widespread travel disruptions. On August 9 and 12, bus services were halted in key locations such as Penzance, Falmouth, and Taunton, leaving many travelers unable to access events like the Boardmasters Festival and Falmouth Week. Tourists visiting Cheddar Gorge and other popular sites in Somerset faced similar challenges, with many struggling to reach these destinations due to the limited bus services available.

The potential impact on local tourism is significant, as reliable public transport is essential for those exploring Cornwall’s scenic routes or navigating Somerset’s historic sites. Any disruption could dampen the experience for both domestic and international visitors, underlining the importance of a swift and amicable resolution to the ongoing pay dispute.
