In a display of remarkable courage and seamanship, Captain Niccolo De Ranieri and his team aboard the Mardi Gras, a Carnival Cruise Line vessel, were honored by the Association for Rescue at Sea (AFRAS) for their heroic efforts that saved the lives of 16 individuals.

During the annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., the prestigious Cruise Ship Humanitarian Assistance Award was presented to Captain De Ranieri and his team by AFRAS. This esteemed organization is committed to acknowledging acts of heroism at sea performed by a diverse array of maritime personnel, spanning from the U.S. Coast Guard to merchant mariners and cruise ship crews.

The remarkable rescue took place on June 3, 2022, as the Mardi Gras was en route to its homeport, Port Canaveral, Florida. While navigating through tumultuous waters near Cuba, the crew spotted a distressed vessel carrying eleven men and five women. Despite facing adverse weather conditions exacerbated by an impending hurricane, Captain De Ranieri and his team acted swiftly to ensure the safety of the stranded individuals. The 16 individuals were brought on board the Mardi Gras, where they received immediate medical attention from the ship's medical staff and were provided with essential provisions such as food and clothing. Concurrently, coordination efforts were initiated with the U.S. Coast Guard to facilitate a safe transfer of the rescued individuals.

Reflecting on the harrowing rescue operation, Captain De Ranieri expressed his gratitude for the recognition bestowed upon him and his team, emphasizing the profound sense of responsibility that all mariners carry. He commended his team for their bravery and synchronized efforts in executing the rescue mission, underscoring the collective commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of those in distress at sea. "Receiving this award is a humbling reminder of the responsibility we have as mariners," remarked Captain De Ranieri. "I'm proud of my team's brave and coordinated efforts during this rescue. It's an honor to be recognized, and I'm thankful those 16 people were brought to safety."

The recognition of Captain De Ranieri and his team serves as a poignant reminder of the maritime tradition of rendering assistance to those in peril on the sea. Furthermore, it highlights the unwavering commitment of Carnival Cruise Line and its personnel to uphold the highest standards of safety and humanitarianism. Notably, this act of heroism is emblematic of Carnival's broader ethos, as evidenced by the numerous other rescue missions undertaken by Carnival teams in 2023, which collectively contributed to the safe rescue of 57 stranded individuals.
