For tourists seeking a peaceful break in France, Colmar in the Grand Est region is a hidden gem. Known for inspiring the village in Disney's *Beauty and the Beast*, Colmar offers a charming escape from crowded cities like Paris and Cannes.

Colmar, located on the Vistula River, dates back to the seventh century and features stunning Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Lucy from the travel blog On the Luce highlights Colmar's picturesque streets, likening them to childhood fairy tales with wooden turrets, tiny cottages, and a candy-colored bakery. "Colmar was apparently the inspiration for the village in the Disney film Beauty and the Beast, and it's not hard to see why. Walking through its streets is like seeing childhood fairy stories come to life," Lucy explains.

One of the best things to do in Colmar is to stroll through the narrow streets of the old town, where visitors can admire a wide range of traditional buildings. The area is known for its German-style houses and shops with timber frames and distinctive pastel colors, often complemented by vibrant flower arrangements around the windows.

Colmar's old town also features numerous independent shops and cafes, perfect for buying souvenirs and sampling local pastries and wine. The town’s relaxed atmosphere and charming aesthetics make it an ideal spot for tourists seeking a quieter experience.

For those interested in a unique attraction, the Toy Museum in central Colmar is a must-visit. Housed in a former cinema, the museum showcases popular toys from every decade since the 1800s, reflecting changes within society. Admission is affordable, with €5.50 for adults and €4.20 for under 15s, making it a delightful visit for both the young and the young at heart.

Lastly, a trip to Petit Venice is essential for anyone visiting Colmar. This area is historically where merchants lived and transported goods from the nearby River Lauch to local businesses. The houses are painted in colors corresponding to the trade they were associated with, creating a picturesque scene. One of the best ways to see Petit Venice is by boat tour, and it's advisable to book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

Colmar, less than an hour from Strasbourg, provides a unique blend of history, culture, and fairytale charm, making it a must-visit for those looking to explore a quieter side of France.
