An unusual protest broke out aboard the luxury cruise liner SH Diana when a group of passengers declared a hunger strike after an engine malfunction disrupted their long-awaited journey to Antarctica. Travelers, who paid over $12,000 for the 20-day cruise, were met with unexpected itinerary changes as the ship's captain was forced to cancel scheduled stops in South Georgia and the final destination itself.

Swan Hellenic offered compensation in the form of a 50% cash refund or a 65% credit for future cruises, but this did not satisfy some passengers. Among them, a group of Russian tourists expressed their dissatisfaction by refusing to eat, aiming to draw attention to their demands. "For the majority of us, this was our first and possibly last chance to see Antarctica," one passenger lamented in a letter to the company's management.

Unexpected Challenges for Tourists

Cruise trips to Antarctica are a unique experience, often associated with high expectations and significant costs. However, this incident highlights the importance of considering risks such as technical issues or itinerary changes. Experts recommend that those planning trips to remote regions carefully review compensation and insurance policies to avoid disappointment.

The ship's captain and company management described the passengers' actions as counterproductive, promising to find a swift resolution to the conflict. This case serves as a reminder that thorough preparation and a detailed understanding of cruise terms are essential for a successful journey.
