The security system in cheap hotels often leaves much to be desired. Doors with flimsy locks can be a problem if someone thinks of stealing from guests.

It's not always possible to hide valuables in a safe or take them with you, but you can hide them well with ingenuity. Express gave tips on where thieves will not go.

It's not for nothing that they say you should hide in a visible place. Criminals usually climb into cabinets, under a mattress or in a bag, and don't even think to check less obvious hiding places.

Joaquin, a Spanish flight attendant working at London Gatwick Airport, leaves money and cards in his shoes. He is convinced that thieves will never think to check other people's shoes.

Other safe places include hairbrush handles and empty bottles. For example, money can be placed inside used, washed and dried shampoo. The hygiene products will definitely not be stolen.

To scare away unwanted guests, experts advise leaving the TV on, creating the illusion of being in the room.

Valuables can also be taken to the reception, where there is always a safe and responsible hotel staff.
