Passengers travelling across western England this Easter are set to experience major rail disruptions due to scheduled engineering works by Network Rail. Between April 12 and April 21, services on several lines will be affected, including the complete closure of the Maidenhead–Marlow route. Replacement buses will run during this period. Work near Acton East 18–21 April will reduce train frequency between Reading, London Paddington causing disruption for multiple operators during work.

In Frome, essential track maintenance will suspend direct train services from 10pm on April 19 to 10pm on April 21. During this time, trains will bypass the town entirely, and buses will connect travellers between Frome and Westbury. Network Rail has also scheduled critical upgrades to switches, crossings, and overhead line equipment as part of long-term improvements. These works are tied to infrastructure development for HS2 near Old Oak Common station.

Travellers are being reminded to check their journey details before setting out, as many regular schedules will be revised or replaced. The Easter weekend typically sees a surge in travel, particularly among tourists and families, which makes advance planning even more important this year. Longer journey times, alternate connections, and service diversions may cause delays, so consulting updated timetables is strongly recommended.

Despite the short-term inconvenience, these upgrades are intended to improve long-term rail performance. Track renewals and signalling improvements will reduce faults and delays, enhancing reliability across western routes. The work also gets the network ready for future high speed services; designed for more capacity, futureproof to modern rail standards. Result, a safer and more efficient system for the daily commuter and occasional traveler alike.

The disruption could mean missed plans or longer, more complicated journeys during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Travellers may need to adjust itineraries or consider alternative transport options. The takeaway is clear: those planning to use the train over Easter should stay informed, check updates regularly, and build extra time into their travel schedules.
