Expanded "Book-a-Bus" Service Enhances Travel Options in Barnham
Starting Thursday June 6, residents and travelers in the Barnham area can enjoy a new flexible bus service, "Book-a-Bus 97 Flex." This service aims to improve connectivity for those living or commuting in Barnham, Aldingbourne, Eartham, Shripney, Slindon, and Walberton, providing better links to local towns and transport networks.
The "Book-a-Bus" initiative is an on-demand service designed for areas in West Sussex with limited traditional bus services. Funded by the Department for Transport, this service is part of West Sussex County Council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, which aims to make bus travel more convenient and attractive for both residents and visitors.
Operating Monday to Saturday, excluding public holidays, the "97 Flex" bus follows a semi-flexible route during peak hours from 06:45 to 09:30 and 16:30 to 19:00. During these times, the bus serves a specific commuter zone from Slindon, requiring travelers to book a seat in advance. The bus then follows a fixed route to Barnham and back, allowing passengers to either book a seat or flag the bus down.
In off-peak hours from 09:30 to 16:30, the "97 Flex" becomes completely flexible, responding to live booking requests across the wider area. This service connects passengers to nearby towns like Arundel, Barnham, and Tangmere, providing access to other travel options, such as rail services to London and Brighton or local bus routes like the 85/85A, 500, and 700.
Councillor Joy Dennis, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, emphasized the positive impact of the expanded bus services on residents' lives and sustainable transport goals. "The Barnham area is a busy hub for commuters and residents, and we are pleased to extend our ‘Book-a-Bus’ service to provide a new, flexible travel option," she said. Dennis highlighted the council's commitment to improving the transport network to support a sustainable and prosperous economy in West Sussex.
To use the "Book-a-Bus 97 Flex" service or plan a journey, residents can download the "Book-a-Bus Barnham" app from the App Store or Google Play Store, or call the booking center at 01243 858854. Bookings can be made on the day or up to 48 hours in advance. Payments are accepted via the app or on the bus, with cash payments available. Group bookings for up to five seats are also possible, subject to availability.
