According to PYOK, the girl accidentally hit the armrest's mechanism while attempting to use it, resulting in a severe injury. Doctors who were onboard the flight provided immediate assistance, but it was determined that she required surgery to repair the damaged tendons and ligaments.

The child's father has chosen to file a lawsuit in a Chicago court against United Airlines, alleging that the injuries resulted from the airline's negligence in failing to install necessary safety measures.

The child inserted her finger into the armrest hinge while it was in the raised position, but the armrest suddenly lowered, trapping her hand.

The passenger's family initiated legal proceedings in Chicago under the Montreal Convention, an international treaty that guarantees specific rights to passengers in the event of accidents or injuries.

A representative from United Airlines emphasized that customer safety is their top priority and confirmed that medical assistance was provided, with the passenger being attended to by medical personnel upon landing.
