The eruption of Mount Ledobi on the remote island of Flores, located over 800 kilometers from Bali, has had significant repercussions for air travel to this popular tourist destination. Since the eruption began on November 4, the volcano has continuously expelled ash, rocks, and lava, leading to the deaths of nine people and injuring dozens of local residents.

Tourists arriving at Bali's international airport in Denpasar anxiously awaited updates on their flights. While some airlines started to reschedule departures, many travelers were faced with flight cancellations and difficulties in returning home. Virgin Airlines, according to some passengers, informed them of the need to find alternative return routes on their own, which left some tourists frustrated. Certain passengers expressed disappointment, describing the airline's response as lacking in support given the challenging situation.

Risks of Flying Amidst Volcanic Activity

The volcanic ash released by Mount Ledobi poses a serious threat to aviation. Experts highlight that the fine ash particles can interfere with aircraft engines, which in the worst case could lead to engine shutdowns mid-air. As a result, each airline makes independent decisions about the safety of flights under active volcanic conditions. Ultimately, while carriers like Qantas and Virgin temporarily suspended flights, they resumed service once the situation stabilized, thanking passengers for their patience.

In response to the volcano’s activity, more than 12,000 local residents have been evacuated from areas near the mountain. Indonesian authorities are closely monitoring wind direction changes to assess potential risks to other communities. Should the situation worsen, the evacuation zone may be expanded to ensure the safety of both residents and tourists.

Recommendations for Travelers

For tourists on Bali and nearby islands, it is essential to stay updated on flight schedules and be prepared for potential delays and cancellations. In such cases, travelers are advised to keep airline contact details handy and review compensation options in the event of significant delays or cancellations.
