In Sicily, residents of Licata, located on the southern coast of Sicily, faced severe consequences after intense rainfall triggered flooding, primarily affecting low-lying areas where homes and agricultural lands were submerged by water and mud.

Due to the region's dry climate, the soil in Licata becomes so hardened over time that when heavy rains fall, the water fails to absorb and quickly turns into uncontrollable streams. As a resident of Licata, explained

The soils harden so much from the drought that when it rains they become like cement, and this quantity of water becomes unmanageable.

This phenomenon often leads to rivers overflowing and streets flooding, as seen with the Salso River, which overflowed its banks.

According to the Mayor of Licata

The rainfall that fell in the interior of Sicily had the Salso riverbed as a means of conveyance towards Licata. The Salso River, which is usually around 2-3 meters high, exceeded 8 meters.

As a result of this overflow, lower-lying areas were submerged, causing enormous damage to both private properties and agricultural lands. The agricultural sector in particular suffered devastating losses due to the flooding.

For many residents, such as Giuseppe, the events were shocking.

Moments of panic for the houses on the lower floors and moments of anguish for the farmers who unfortunately lost their crops.
Giuseppe

he shared, describing the emotional toll the floods took on the community. People were forced to evacuate their homes, fearing for their safety, while farmers faced massive crop losses.

The disaster not only affected homes but also the region’s beaches. At the popular Mollarella beach, mud and debris formed a large contaminated zone. Due to the lack of regular riverbank maintenance, water carried large amounts of waste, further complicating the situation, which was particularly concerning for tourists in the area.

This natural disaster may also have repercussions for the region's tourism industry. Licata, a popular coastal destination known for its scenic landscapes and beaches, is now dealing with the aftermath of destroyed infrastructure and polluted waters, which may deter visitors for some time. Local authorities have already begun planning recovery efforts, but as Mayor Balsamo emphasized,

It will take time to fully restore and clean up all affected areas.
