Travelers heading to popular summer destinations like Tenby and Saundersfoot now have the opportunity to ride on brand-new trains. On Monday, June 10, Transport for Wales introduced their Class 197 trains to the Pembroke line, enhancing the travel experience just in time for the holiday season.

The new Class 197 trains, assembled in Wales, began operating on the route between Swansea/Carmarthen and Pembroke Dock. These modern trains typically consist of three carriages but can accommodate up to four, providing increased capacity and comfort for summer travelers.

Marie Daly, Chief Customer and Culture Officer at Transport for Wales, expressed her excitement about the launch, stating, "We’re delighted to start running new trains on the Pembroke line in time for the summer holiday period. TfW is committed to providing people with an alternative to using cars, and these new trains offer improved seating, air conditioning, and customer information."

The Class 197 trains were produced at the CAF train factory in Llanwern, Newport. Once fully deployed, a total of 77 of these trains will serve routes throughout Wales and its borders, forming the backbone of the mainline fleet.

While the transition to the new trains is ongoing, passengers may still encounter some older trains. However, these will be gradually phased out over the coming years, ensuring a fully modernized fleet in the near future.
