FlySafair, Southern Africa's premier low-cost airline, is making headlines with its astonishing annual sale, offering 50,000 one-way tickets for just about 50 cents (R10) each. This exciting promotion is part of the airline's celebration of its tenth anniversary, aiming to make air travel more accessible to South Africans.

On May 8, 2024, FlySafair launched this year’s sale at 09:00 local time, continuing a tradition that began with its first birthday. Over the years, the airline has dramatically reduced prices during these sales, even offering tickets for as low as R1 in the past. This year, the promotion includes not only the R10 tickets but also a 30% discount on all flights and a chance to win free flights for a year.

The process to secure these highly sought-after R10 tickets involves a waiting room system on the airline's website, designed to manage the large influx of hopeful buyers. This system randomly selects customers to proceed to the sale page at intervals, where they must act quickly to book their flights, as sessions expire after ten minutes. Last year, 75,000 people queued within the first hour, underscoring the immense popularity of the sale.

FlySafair operates numerous domestic and international routes from Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport, with discounted tickets available for cities including Cape Town, Durban, and several others. The promotional tickets are valid for travel between May 9 and November 30, 2024, and are randomly placed on selected days and flights.

This sale not only boosts FlySafair’s visibility but also significantly enhances brand loyalty and customer engagement. It positions the airline as the first stop for many South Africans planning future travels, effectively bypassing traditional booking channels like travel agents, which further reduces costs.

While the R10 tickets cover all airport taxes and VAT, additional fees for services like checked luggage and priority boarding are not included. Payment must be completed promptly to confirm the reservation, with the airline advising customers to prepare by registering and saving payment details on their website in advance.

FlySafair's Chief Marketing Officer, Kirby Gordon, highlights the dual benefit of the sale: "It's a massive exposure for us, and a great way to invite people to experience our service firsthand." This strategy not only fills seats that might otherwise remain empty but also cements FlySafair's reputation as a generous and innovative company committed to making air travel affordable for everyone.
